Contribution to Strategy:
The Adolescent Ministry Development Facilitator would partner with EE/SIM churches to initiate and build strong ministries to adolescents in these communities, which are key because many rural youth come for secondary education. Burkina Faso has a large number of adolescents, those aged 13 to 18 years, and more advancing into this age group all the time. Adolescents are a neglected age group by the church; they are considered neither children nor young adults. At this critical age they are not receiving the necessary guidance and support for spiritual growth. Adolescents are increasingly being drawn into the secular culture. Those no longer in school have a low level of education, particularly the girls. Therefore, good life skills may be lacking. In urban centres, many adolescent girls resort to prostitution. The prospect for employment even upon completion of school is poor. In cities it is common to see groups of boys sitting idle by the roadsides. As adolescents are the prime source of future leaders for the church and government, they are a strategic group to reach with the gospel. They cannot continue to be neglected. The goal of this position is two-fold: first, to develop programmes in the church to help adolescents grow in their faith and to learn leadership and life skills; second, to communicate the gospel to the unreached youth and give them opportunities to develop life skills. This will be accomplished through partnering with local churches and equipping leaders to take charge of the ministries developed.
Ministry: YY- Youth Ministry
Responsibilities: The Adolescent Ministry Development Facilitator (AMDF) will work in partnership with the local SIM related churches (EE/SIM). They are, however, not excluded from working with churches of other denominations or organizations. The AMDF will help to develop adolescent ministries which may include fellowship clubs and Bible studies, training adolescents in leadership skills and other innovative forms of ministry appropriate to the setting. The AMDF will be involved in the discipleship of adolescents and also of adult leaders. There is a strong emphasis on mentoring leaders of adolescents at the local church level.
Ministry 2: CC- Christian Education Programs/Materials
Other Ministry Possibilities: Opportunities may be available in the larger cities to establish neighborhood sports-based ministries, groups for adolescent girls who have minimal education in order to hear the gospel and learn life skills, provide Christian education in secondary schools, and partner with Christian vocation training schools for youth.
Future Plans: The focus is on developing ministries led by local Christians, perhaps even youth themselves, who have been trained to lead the ministry and to train other leaders.
