Stationsschwester mit Schulungskompetenz (Inpatient Ward Nurse PRF 8292) Bei Interesse PRF Nr. angeben

Contribution to Strategy: Developing quality inpatient services is critical to our program for HIV/AIDS ministry and training of Malawian clinicians and nurses.

Responsibilities: Partners In Hope (PIH) will initiate its inpatient wards in late 2009 and will need a nurse with experience in managing hospitalized patients, as well as in some details of managing a ward. A proportion of the patients will be ‘private’ patients, including expatriates, who will have higher standards for care than many of the current Malawian nurses have dealt with. There will certainly be a component of ‘public relations’ that will be important as they develop their reputation as a center of excellence for inpatient care. The addition of inpatient services at PIH will greatly enhance the clinic's ability to provide quality care for the ‘sickest of the sick’ in both the private clinic and the Moyo Clinic.

Most deaths of HIV/AIDS patients occur in the first three months of treatment. This is largely due to presenting very late, but also to limitations in diagnosis and management of acute and serious infections. The ward will have one ‘intensive care unit’ next to the nurse’s station, a VIP room next to that, and three additional semi-private rooms for 2-4 patients each. Caring for patients and family members during times of serious illness provides an excellent opportunity for ministry.

The ward will link with PIH’s pastoral and counseling ministries to provide spiritual care for its patients. Whether it is end of life care or a brief admission, the level of personal connection will be much greater than is possible in an outpatient setting. Responsibilities will include: •Working with doctors and the matron in developing/fine-tuning protocols for managing the ward. •Developing and monitoring a rota (schedule) of nurses and support staff. •Monitoring and maintaining stocks of medical supplies within the ward. •Providing direct patient care during specified shifts. •Overseeing general nursing and support care of patients in the ward. •Overseeing and administering medications and other treatments. •Assisting with the training of PIH nursing staff, as well as nurses on clinical attachment at PIH.

Other Ministry Possibilities: Development of women's ministry within HIV/AIDS clinic (the Moyo Clinic). Training of nurses from PIH and other institutions in quality inpatient care.

Future Plans: A major part of this position will be to develop and improve protocols for management of inpatient wards. This will be taught to PIH nurses, as well as nurses rotating from other facilities. The long-term goal would be to identify and equip a Malawian counterpart to assume the role of Ward Nurse Supervisor.
