Contribution to Strategy:

Partners In Hope is a Malawian non-profit organization founded by Dr. Perry Jansen and a group of Malawian professionals committed to having an impact on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Malawi. Approximately 1 million of Malawi’s 15 million population are infected with HIV, and it is having a devastating impact on all areas of Malawian society. The Malawi Ministry of Health launched an HIV/AIDS treatment program in 2004 that is now providing life-saving antiretroviral therapy over 350,000 patients. PIH has been an integral player in this process and has grown in its breadth and quality.

The PIH Medical Center now cares for over 6,000 HIV/AIDS patients and serves as a referral center for the region for more complicated HIV patients. With an excellent laboratory, x-ray, ultrasounds services, and five expatriate physicians, PIH has become a center of excellence for HIV care. In 2010, PIH was funded by USAID to expand our reach by providing support, training, and mentoring in over 50 facilities in the central and northern region of Malawi through the EQUIP-Malawi project.

The PIH Medical Center also has a very successful private, general clinic caring for HIV/AIDS patients alongside routine non-HIV patients. This provides increased anonymity for HIV patients and generates income to support our many free HIV services.

HIV/AIDS is a focus area for SIM Malawi, and this position will contribute greatly to quality care and to training local staff

Responsibilities: PIH has two pharmacies, one in our private clinic, Dalitso ("blessing") Clinic, and one in our free HIV clinic, Moyo ("Life") Clinic. Each pharmacy has a pharmacy technician and a pharmacy assistant. The medical center cares for 250-300 patients per day with up to 15 in-patients. We are in need of a pharmacist to help improve systems for dispensing medications, educating patients, improving systems for drug forecasting, and liaising with clinical staff to improve communication and collaboration in improved patient care.

Dispensing and Patient Education

Although routine dispensing of medication will not be a large part of this post, this position will assist local pharmacy staff when needed to dispense medications in the private clinic, free HIV clinic and in-patient wards according to Standard Operating Procedures. This will include counseling patients on proper dosage, possible side effects, and importance of drug adherence. It will also include documentation of medications administered either through electronic or manual systems. He/she will work with the Pharmacy Manager in developing or contextualizing relevant patient education information both written and verbal.

Drug Forecasting, Inventory and Procurement

This position will take the lead in development and implementation of systems for documentation of drug utilization, current inventory, drug-use forecasting and procurement of medications and consumables. This will include establishing or modifying regular inventory reports to include drugs, on hand and dispensed. The position will liaise with the Finance Department in procurement, dispensing, and inventory reporting.

Clinical Liaison and Training

The position will liaise with clinical staff regarding drugs on hand, new medications, and drugs needed. He/she will serve on the Formulary Committee to help determine changes in the formulary. He/she will assist with the training of clinical and nursing staff in pharmaceutical dispensing and set up policies and procedures for the ongoing function of the Formulary Committee.
