We work in a mother tongue literacy project among Darfur refugees in eastern Chad. The Massalit people have about 120’000 people in camps and we work on community literacy programmes among them. The project is going well and has expanded to include a children's program in the primary schools. However, with only two team members based in this area, our abilities are limited and we need help in the form of a

Multilingual Education Specialist – (Preschool)

Your Task

To facilitate the development of materials, curriculum, teacher training, supervision and all aspects of a mother tongue based preschool program, including transfer to the official school language (Arabic).

Basic Requirements

We need someone with a background in early childhood education and who would be willing to come and oversee all aspects of starting a preschool program and an initial trial in a few schools. Knowledge of Arabic would be extremely useful, as the school curriculum is in Arabic. A working knowledge of French would be helpful to facilitate communication with UNHCR and NGO workers.

Location: Eastern Chad

Language: Arabic and some French (English sometimes helpful)

What you’ll need

• Personal relationship with Jesus Christ

• A church that stands behind you

• Completed teacher training (this project could also be done as an internship)

• Team-mindset, resilience and ability to work without close supervision

• (Desirable) Experience or desire to work in an inter-cultural context

Minimum age: 20

Duration: 1 year or more

The scope and timeframe of the project can be discussed based on the availability and expertise of the worker. Ideally, the candidate would live and work with us as part of the project team, but after initial orientation to the language and culture, should be able to function fairly independently.
