Contribution to Strategy: Bembereke Hospital is a 105 bed rural hospital, acting as a district hospital and as reference hospital for certain cases. In 1999, the hospital saw 42,000 outpatients and admitted 4700. The X-ray dept. is a single machine, single room set up with adjoining dark room. At present, 2 medical assistants - garcons de salle - take most routine X-rays, with a 3rd person who also works in the pharmacy joining the on call rota. No contrast studies are undertaken at this time. There is a new cohort of Garcons / Filles de Salle currently completing their formation (training). They are trained in first aid, patient observations (temp, pulse, blood pressure, weight, height, respiratory rate), nutrition, hygiene, disinfection. From this new cohort, the hospital would like to train 2-3 people to take X-rays. Those Garcons de Salle already trained are also involved in translation and one of them in the making of prosthetic limbs.

Ministry: HL- Medical Technologist, incl. X-ray, Lab

Responsibilities: Review safety & quality of X-rays. Train 2-3 new medical assistants in the positioning, exposure, & development of X-rays; danger and safety issues.
